Industrial Water Softener Resin Rebed / Replacement

Industrial water softeners utilize resin that must be replaced periodically. This process of replacement is referred to as a water softener rebed.

Resin rebedIndustrial Water Solutions is the leader in the industry for rebedding, rebuilding, and retrofitting commercial and industrial softeners, filters, and reverse osmosis systems. This is what makes us different: our expertise, our experience, and our solution-focused approach. Rebedding and rebuilding industrial water systems such as industrial water softeners is as much art as engineering science, so expertise is important. That is why Industrial Water Solutions is the clear choice for industrial water systems rebedding, replacement, and rebuilding.

When is a softener rebed needed?
Industrial water softener resin usually lasts for 8-13 years depending on water chemistry and other factors such as the oxidizing content of water.

Why should we replace the water softener resin?
When industrial water softener resin ages, the resin doesn’t perform as well. This old resin loses capacity and has a higher pressure drop than newer resin. The resin is also not very efficient from a salt usage and water usage standpoint.

Should we test the resin before replacing it?
It is possible to test the resin, but often the resin is not tested before replacement. That is because testing resin is expensive and time-consuming. As a result, if your water softener resin is in the 8-13 year range, it may be more cost-effective to simply proceed with the rebedding. By analogy, if your car has tires that are rated for 50,000 miles, and you have already driven 60,000 miles, you don’t really need to check the tread to know if it is worn down. Unlike tires, checking the wear of your resin isn’t nearly as easy as just looking at them – it takes significant time and cost. So testing is usually limited to large systems that will require more expensive rebedding.

How is industrial water softener resin replaced or rebedded?
The resin (and gravel, if necessary) is sucked out with a pump or a vacuum truck, and disposed of accordingly. Note that typically, gravel does not need to be removed unless you have resin or gravel in your lines. We don’t suggest doing it unless it is really necessary because it is not easy to get out and if the distribution system is not broken, it often ends up broken after the gravel is taken out. If the gravel is removed, you should plan to replace the underdrain.

Then the re-commissioning of the system begins. This is a detailed process that includes installation of gravel/media, filling of the tank, and returning of the softener to online status. This process is handled by talented field personnel that you can rely upon to make this as easy as possible for you.
