Industrial Water Filters
Learn about various types of industrial water filters and how they remove impurities from industrial process water. Industrial water and commercial water filtration systems differ from residential filtration systems in several ways, including their capacity and scale, their filtration precision, their durability, and their customization for specific industrial applications such as food & beverage.

An industrial water filter is used for industrial water purification and comes in a range of sizes and water filter media. Common filters include industrial carbon water filters and industrial iron water filters.
Industrial filtration units have an auto-cleansing functionality as they automatically backwash and rinse on a periodic time clock basis. This serves to cleanse and reclassify the filter media.
Notably, sediment filters incur an increased pressure loss from the inlet to the outlet as filtered particles collect in the bed. As an option, these industrial filters can be furnished to backwash and rinse on a preset pressure loss basis. The M series of industrial filters (manganese greensand) require periodic regeneration in order to function properly, so an optional industrial filter regeneration system is available to facilitate that regeneration. For high total dissolved solids (TDS) and high turbidity (NTU), ultrafiltration (UF) systems should be used because they filter much smaller particles, down to 0.02 microns.
Water Filter Types for Industrial and Demanding Commercial Filtration Applications
Several types of water filters are useful for industrial water filtration as well as demanding commercial filter use:
- Multi-Media / Multi-Layer Water Filters – high efficiency for excellent filtration down to 5-10 micron size
- General Sediment Water Filters – general service filter system for removal down to the 20-40 micron range
- Iron Filters – capable of reducing iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide
- Activated Carbon Filters – designed for the reduction of tastes, odors, and dissolved organic material from municipal and industrial water supplies
- Neutralization Water Filters – used to neutralize acidic or low pH water supplies to a neutral, less corrosive effluent
- Zeolite Single-Media Water Filters – capable of higher flow rates than multi-layer filters with the same diameter tank, and able to filter down to 5 microns instead
- Carbon and Sediment Filters – can reduce total suspended solids (TSS) and sediment from the water down to 3-5 microns
- Steel Industrial Water Filters – designed for larger commercial and industrial applications with multi-tank parallel systems common for high flow rates

In addition to the service flow, the selection of a filtration system must take into account the available backwash flow rate. This is the most important function in the proper operation of a filter. Periodically, the accumulated impurities (iron, sediment, etc.) must be removed (backwashed) from the industrial filter. Backwash flow rates are always much higher than service flow rates and therefore limit the size of the filter that can be installed. As a general rule in sizing industrial filters, select the largest filter that can be backwashed with the flow rate available at the point of filter installation, then note the service flow rate for the filter selected. If it is not adequate for the flow to be treated, a twin or triple filter installed in parallel is required. Alternatively, an ultrafiltration (UF) system can be used because they have much smaller backwash rates.
